Project actions
-
Α) Initiation Stage
Action 1:
Setting procedures and rules for the effective coordination of the project. A project Management Board and a Working Group are set. The main tasks of the Management Board are the following:
(a) Project coordination
(b) Manage overall performance
(c) Ensure adequate collaboration between beneficiaries
(d) Secure smooth information flow to the Commission
(e) Financial management
(f) Organize and coordinate the production of deliverables
(g) Produce progress reports
The duties of the Working Group include the design, quality control and revision of the IAP parameters, following scientific consultation with both Greek and international experts. Furthermore, the Working Group is responsible for the implementation of the methodology developed on the farm level and for the delivery of the finalized complete IAP.
Representatives from all the project beneficiaries participate in both the Management Board and the Working Group. In addition, the contracts between the beneficiaries and the coordinator are signed during this Action. -
Β) Preparatory Stage
Action 2:
Establishment of the background for the environmental Impact Assessment Procedure. This phase includes a scoping study for aspects, impacts, endpoints and parameters to be considered for IAP. Regarding parameter evaluation, the selection criteria are established and their corresponding weight and values are attributed.
Action 3:
Design of the Impact Assessment Procedure.
The Action includes:1. Setting environmental performance indicators and a method to evaluate the significance of impacts,
2. Open Consultation with interested parties on Impact Assessment Procedure and establishment of system for the introduction of data in a database and in GIS maps ,
3. Selection of parcels and of the respective farmers groups that participate in the pilot implementation of the method
4. Signing of contracts
5. Training of advisor- agronomists on the following subjects:
(α) Parameters and impacts related to Plant Health, Soil and Water, and biodiversity
(β) Implementation of the Impact Assessment Procedure.
At the final stage, the trained advisors propose a prioritization system for the environmental impacts, which is considered in the Method calibration.
-
C) Implementation Stage
Action 4:
Using the Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure on Olives Parcels
Available data per parcel are collected, and evaluated to identify the significant aspects and impacts, and thus the environmental profile and the inherent production capacity of each parcel.Action 5:
Improvement Plans
The Improvement Plans for each parcel are established, by setting, in agreement with the farmers, the Environmental Objectives and Targets for each parcel. In addition, instructions are compiled regarding:1. Good Agricultural Practices (independently of the Improvement Plan) in day-to-day actions executed by farmers
2. Good Practices for successful implementation of the agreed plan.
These instructions concern plant health, soil and water management and also biodiversity.
Action 6:
Monitoring progress towards Sustainability
The implementation of instructions by the farmers, outlined in Action 5, as well as their crop is monitored. The performance of each parcel is assessed and measurements are taken regarding Environmental Impacts and Parameters in for the following categories:(a) Plant health and protection
(b) Pollution on soil and water caused by Plant Protection Products and fertilisers
(g) Biodiversity.
Action 7:
Validation of Impact Assessment Procedure
All the data are gathered and reviewed by the coordinator, while views are exchanged about the effectiveness of the methodology.
Action 8:
Standardization of Impact Assessment Procedure as Guideline for EMAS at farm level. -
D) Dissemination Activities
Action 9:
Communication of the proposed strategy
This action aims to convey the project results to the stakeholders, interested parties and the general public. Awareness and dissemination actions include presentation of the IAP method during project conferences and workshops, and during open communication with various social groups and expert scientists. -
Ε) Project Internal and External Monitoring
Monitoring of project progress.
The internal monitoring of the project for every action is carried out by the coordinator (in cooperation with a monitoring assistant) every 3 months. In addition, an independent external auditor is nominated to verify the financial statements provided to the Commission -
F) After LIFE+ Actions
In order to establish a successful communication and dissemination plan after the conclusion of the project, methods such as the following could be applied:
- Project dissemination on the relevant website both in Greek and English.
- Notice boards with the LIFE+ logo.
- Articles for the local press in Greek.
- Presentations of the project’s results in agricultural TV programs.
- Conference presentations of the project’s scientific results.
- Training courses on the implementation of the Impact Assessment Procedure for farmers and other interested parties. Training courses will be self-financed.
- Further maintenance and operation of the network of farmers, agronomists and scientists established during the project.
- Communication of the project results to the scientific teams of other projects in the broader area.
